Key Requirements
Prop 207 permits home cultivation but imposes specific conditions to keep growing private and secure:
- Enclosed and locked: Plants must be grown in a space that is fully enclosed and locked to prevent unauthorized access. This can be a locked room, closet, grow tent with lock, or a locked outdoor greenhouse.
- Not visible from public: Your plants cannot be visible from any public place without the use of binoculars, aircraft, or other optical aids. Window grows visible from the street would not comply.
- Your primary residence: The cultivation must occur at your primary residence. You cannot grow at a vacation property, storage unit, or any other secondary location.
Desert Growing Challenges
Growing cannabis in Arizona's desert climate presents unique challenges. Summer temperatures exceeding 115 degrees in Phoenix make pure outdoor growing during peak months nearly impossible. Indoor grows face enormous energy costs from HVAC cooling. Many home growers find success with:
- Indoor grows with climate control — most reliable year-round
- Greenhouse or shade structure — leverages Arizona's abundant sunshine while managing heat
- Fall/winter outdoor grows — Arizona's mild winters offer excellent conditions from October through April
- Water management — cannabis plants need approximately 6 gallons per day during flowering
