Your First Arizona Dispensary Visit

Whether you're a first-time buyer or new to Arizona, here's exactly what to expect when you walk into one of the state's 170+ licensed dispensaries.

What to Bring

  • Valid government-issued photo ID proving you are 21 or older (driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID)
  • Cash or debit card — most Arizona dispensaries accept debit cards, but cash is always accepted. Credit cards are generally not accepted due to federal banking restrictions.
  • Medical card (if applicable) for lower tax rates and higher possession limits

The Experience

Arizona dispensaries typically follow this flow:

  • Check-in: Present your ID at the front desk. First-time visitors register in the system. This takes 2–5 minutes.
  • Waiting area: Wait to be called by a budtender. Busy times (weekends, after work) may have 10–20 minute waits.
  • Consultation: A budtender helps you choose products. Don't hesitate to ask questions — they are there to help, especially with first-time buyers.
  • Purchase: Products are weighed, packaged, and totaled. Tax is added at the register.
  • Exit: All products must be in sealed packaging when you leave.

First-Time Discounts

Arizona dispensaries are known for aggressive first-time customer discounts. Expect 30–51% off your first purchase at many locations. Daily deals and happy hours are also standard across the market. Ask about current promotions when you check in.

Cannabis Delivery

Since November 1, 2024, recreational cannabis delivery is available statewide (some cities have opted out — Mesa has banned recreational delivery). See our delivery page for details.

Pro Tip

If you're new to cannabis, start with a low-dose edible (2.5–5mg THC) or a small amount of flower. Tell your budtender it's your first time — they will help you find an appropriate starting point.
