Why Maintain a Medical Card?

With recreational cannabis available, many patients wonder if a medical card is still worth it. The answer depends on your situation, but there are clear advantages:

  • Tax savings: Medical purchases pay ~8% vs. ~24% for recreational. On $200/month in purchases, that's roughly $384 per year in savings.
  • Higher limits: 2.5 ounces per 14 days vs. 1 ounce recreational
  • Employment protections: Limited protections under AMMA that recreational users do not have
  • Access if repeal passes: The 2026 repeal initiative would preserve the medical program even if commercial recreational sales end

Qualifying Conditions

Arizona's qualifying conditions include:

  • Cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C
  • ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
  • Crohn's disease
  • Agitation of Alzheimer's disease
  • PTSD (added 2014)
  • Chronic or debilitating disease causing severe/chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures, or severe/persistent muscle spasms

Over 90% of patients qualify under the chronic pain provision.
