Recreational Limits (21+)

Under the Smart and Safe Arizona Act, adults 21 and older may possess up to one ounce of marijuana, with no more than 5 grams of concentrate. The concentrate limit is included within the 1-ounce total, not in addition to it. There is no daily purchase limit specified in the law beyond the possession limit.

Medical Patient Limits

Registered medical marijuana patients retain enhanced limits of 2.5 ounces per 14-day period. This represents a significantly higher allowance than the recreational limit and is one of the primary reasons patients choose to maintain their medical cards despite the availability of recreational cannabis.

Gifting Rules

Adults 21 and older may gift up to one ounce of marijuana to another person who is 21 or older. The transfer must be a genuine gift — no payment, trade, or exchange of value is permitted. Gifting to anyone under 21 is a criminal offense.

What Happens If You Exceed Limits

Possessing more than the legal limit but less than 2.5 ounces is a petty offense with a $300 maximum fine. Larger amounts escalate to misdemeanor and felony charges. See our penalties page for the full breakdown.
